Cerberus to buy remaining stake from Daimler AG
Cerberus Capital Management is in talks with Daimler AG about acquiring the German company’s remaining minority stake in Chrysler LLC, the companies said today.
“We are currently in discussions. In the event of a successful transaction, all existing industrial relationships between Daimler and Chrysler would continue,” said a statement from Cerberus spokesman Peter Duda.

The third and fourth paragraphs says it all. Nissan doesn’t want closer ties with Chrysler as long as Daimler has access to Nissan’s product plans and Nissan’s inside skinny.. This from the autochannel.com will follow-up on that Wall Street Journal article in my previous posting that points to the reason for the Cerberus offer to buy Daimler’s 19.9% ownership of Chrysler LLC because it is a hindrance to closer cooperation with Nissan. Note that NIssan’s North American sales in August totaled 108,493, an increase of 13.6% over August 2007’s 95,527 sales. Especially noteworthy is that Infiniti accounted for 11,076 of those sales, up from 10,252 in August ‘07..Compare that with Mercedes August sales of 18,507, an 11.8% decrease from August ‘08. (But the new C Class sales were a bright spot for Daimler, up to 6,990 for the month vs 4,500 in the previous year.)
What this means is that long-established luxury marque Mercedes outsold relative upstart Infiniti by only 7,431 unites in August. So, you can see why Nissan may well have told Cerberus that it is unwilling to forge closer ties with Chrysler as long as Mercedes is privy to its product plan and the inside skinny on its manufacturing and technology.

Is chrysler ofr sale again or what ? I may be wrong but i see only two reason why cerebrus wants remainder 20 % stake from Daimler
1. Cerebrus is too happy with purchase and are seeing very good chances of making money by selling cars. Which i seriously doubt.
2. every quarter Daimler disclose losses because of 20 % share in chrysler . These helps every one to predict losses to cerebrus on remainder of stakes @ chrysler making it difficult to find a buyer to chrysler .

I know we love to speculate about the possibility of Nissan purchasing Chrysler, but until a spokes person from either Chrysler or Cerberus uses the term: “All options are on the table” then the speculation is mute.
Chrysler is pressing to get the ENVI product to market, if they make a big splash with ENVI and are able to generate interest in Chrysler then you’ll see Cerberus offer an IPO.
Nissan has its own issues to deal with and I doubt they would be interested in adding to their plate by taking on Chrysler, the risk would out way the rewards.
Your going to see a Mitsubishi-Chrysler type relationship between the two companies: Platform sharing and technology sharing: Chrysler’s replacement of Sebring and Avenger with an Altima platform and the B car platform.
Chrysler is already going to build a full size truck for Nissan, so don’t be surprised if Nissans new minivan is based on Chrysler’s minivan or if the new Durango finds its way to Nissan.

Rich is right about the nature of the relationship developing between Chrysler and Nissan, though I had not yet heard about the next Sebring and Avenger being built on the Altima platform. That would be a hell of an improvement over their current modified Mitsubishi Lancer platform, and couldn’t come too soon.
He’s also right about the big splash Chrysler intends to make with the ENVI, as is made very clear in this Chrysler video.

Rich, a D-car built off the Altima platform would be a winner. However, I think Chrysler is making a monumental mistake by not offering a 4-door sedan C-segment car like the old Neon. With fuel prices the way they are going this size car will become the new family car standard. The Caliber is good but needs refinement. Chrysler’s C-sedan should have better mileage, styling, quality and features than Corolla all for a lower price. That’s what would make buyers sit up and take notice! Unless the ENVI Wrangler and minivan are priced close to the non-ENVI versions they won’t sell. It’ll be like the Hybrid Tahoe and its lack of sales.

You are definitely onto something. The failure to update the PT Cruiser has been a tragedy of major proportions. A lighter vehicle with a more fuel-efficient engine would have been a real winner in this market. Likewise, Dieter made a serious mistake when he dumped the Neon,, instead of updating it with a smoother and more fuel- efficient power train. His European frame of reference showed when he made the Cailber a five-door. Vehicles like that are popular in Europe, but in the U.S., it’s good ole four-door sedans that sell in the compact and midsize categories.

John and DaveS hit it right on the money. The lack of a 4 door sedan in the C segment was a big mistake. Caliber is fine, but 2 cross-overs and an small SUV should be the off-shoots of a high volume sedan (Neon or by some other name). To not update the PT is a tragedy. Such a popular/high volume vehicle that is now very outdated. Throwing away 2 popular vehicles, while you are trying to shove station wagons down the American conusmers throats = 2 blunders by Dieter. Thank God we have Nardellie & Press.

I just used the Altima as an example of what we could see down the road, Chrysler never indicated that they were in talks with Nissan to use the Altima platform for the next Sebring-Avenger replacement.
In fact during our meeting on the 23rd Chrysler made no mention about how far along they were with the Sebring-Avenger replacement.
New small car product would be welcomed by the dealer body, but most of the metro market stores can’t exist on just small car sales.
If the market continues on its current path then you’ll see several more large metro stores go under.
September is always a tough month, but this September is proving to be the toughest month I’ve seen in a long time. Chrysler sales are going to be very disappointing this month.
Retail sales are going to be lucky to reach the 70,000 unit mark and if we don’t see a surge this weekend then 60,000 retail units could be tough to exceed.

Ecuador’s Correa Says OPEC Won’t Let Crude Oil Fall Below $100

Sept. 26 (Bloomberg) — Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries won’t let the price of crude oil fall below $100 per barrel.
OPEC would step in and cut oil production to protect that price level, Correa said today in a television interview on the Cuenca-based ETV Telerama network. His comments were published in a transcript on the presidential Web site.
Ecuador, the oil cartel’s smallest member, has a daily output quota of 520,000 barrels that it has struggled to meet in recent months. It rejoined the group last year after a 15-year pause.
Correa said that oil production would increase due to investment by state-owned PetroEcuador and foreign oil companies, with whom the South American country is renegotiating contracts.

Please feast your eyes on this Chrysler video about the ENVI cars. I posted it earlier but failed to call it your attention. Note especially the venue for this video. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t this look like a Chrysler ad on a Sierra Club Website?
The point, Adam, is that only a small number of optimists have optimists have never predicted a return to anything anything lower than a brief period of oil at $70 a barrel. And most industry analysts cited in the business publications expect that it will ever return to les than $100 a barrel except for very brief periods. That’s because of growing energy use in emerging Third World economies with booming population growth, places like China and India. Oil is a commodity sold in the international market, and decline in use in the US is a drop in the bucket compared to the exponential increase in the demand for oil in India and China. That’s why the emphasis on alternative fuels by industry and governments around the world.
Rich, Detroit has got to learn how to make profitable compacts and subcompacts. On top of that, they have to make them so that their dealers make a profit out of them, too. Everyone recognizes that’s easier said than done, but there is no way out of it if there is going to be any kind oif a future for the Big 3. They’ve got to discard old paradigms and create new ones.

DaveS building a profitable small car has been an issue for the domestic car companies since the days of Pinto, Vega and Omni: It is an oxymoron.
I think Ford has done the best job of building a domestic small car that comes closest to what the Asian manufacturers have to offer, but the Focus has had its quality issues.
Small cars equal small profits which is ok for a dealer like myself, but if you’ve made a significant investment into upgrading or building a new facility then small car profits aren’t going to cover your overhead.
Also Chrysler needs to take a look at the amount of responsibility it is shifting to the dealers when it comes to paying for dealer meetings, software updates, special tools, training and flooring costs.
Common since would dictate that Chrysler should hold the line on adding to the overhead of its dealers, but the reverse is true.
Our forth quarter special tool, software and flooring expenditures are more then double over last year.
For example Chrysler is requiring us to pay over $2,800 for a coolant flush machine. In the mean time I have a memo from Chrysler on my desk telling the dealers that consumers don’t like using our service departments, because we charge to much money to perform unnecessary coolant flushes to their vehicles.

Rich, right on! There’s a real disconnect between what is written in my owner’s manual and what the service advisor at my CDJ dealer recommends. An example is automatic transmission flushes. Chrysler does not recommend changing the fluid unless the car is being used in some commercial fleet capacity. Yet, my dealer pushes these expensive and dangerous transmission flushes because they have to recoup the investment on the stupid machine they bought. Worse, I believe the advisor is truly clueless so he is able to lie without feeling bad about it. I’ve run into similar situations at Honda dealers — this is by no means a CDJ-exclusive problem. I hope you tell Chrysler where they can stuff their equipment and software “requirements.” Floorplanning costs nowadays must be murder — might as well let the other dealers stock the vehicles.

Your insights from the showroom floor is always provocative, intellectually challenging, and appreciated by those of us who are steeped in the history of Chrysler but not at all enamored by the rantings of the vacuous cheer-leaders who think they are big Mopar fans.
Yes, everyone knows it’s difficult for an American manufacturer to make money off small cars, but it can be done and has to be done. The PT Cruiser made money from Day One. Granted, assembly in Toluca was part of the formula which made it successful, but only part. Chrysler’s game plan called for the new Belvedere products to be profitable—–and they would have been had they sold at projected rates, and they WOULD have sold at projected rates in this market except for the fact that so many potential buyers were turned-off by the cheap interiors and what they read in Consumer Reports and other publications that tested Caliber.
A LARGE PART OF THE FORMULA THAT WILL MAKE SALE OF SMALL CARTS PROFITABLE IS THE INCREASED DEMAND IN THAT SEGMENT. Look at the sales states, Rich. The only segment that has increased in sales over the last 6 months in small cars. Chrysler is NOT Small cars rsam, it lOOlOO, > R PART OF THE FORMULA THAT WILO MAKE

Chrysler is not partaking of that increase in sales—and the accompanying profit—-because the buyer is not attracted by Caliber and Compass, turned-off by their interiors, aware of the generally perceived reputation of Chrysler vehicles, and several million of them them have CR and the other reviews. Put a decent small car on the market under today’s market conditions, , assemble it in Toluca or Belvedere, build-in the quality and reliability, resist the urge to cheapen the interior and cut the time on testing for NVH, and it will sell.. Yaris, Corolloa, Focus are all selling very well—and making money for their manufacturers and dealers. By the way, CR has now given the Focus the same red check-mark for reliability that PT Cruiser has always had..

Folks, to get a grip on the future product plans of Chrysler, GM and Ford, look at the fuel efficiency requirements Congress imposed in the bill authorizing the $25 loan. Also, note that the GM CEO answered the question about the affordability of the Chevy Volt by saying that buyers would be subsidized. Don’t you think that the prospect of that subsidy also figured into the development of the ENVI vehicles?
Rich, earning a profit on small cars made in the USA just became a viable proposition—by act of Congress.

I apprciate your excitement with the news of the 25 Billion dollar loan package, but it doesn’t mean that small vehicle profits will rise.
Other then the Pt Cruiser, which was a segment buster, I can’t think of many other small vehicles that sold for sticker or better in the past several years: Mini Cooper did, Prius and some Civics are selling for over sticker.
Small cars are sold to people with limited budgets you can’t run large metro dealerships on profit that is generated by this segment.
Think about it Toyota has gone heavy into the SUV and Truck market over the past several years, they did it to generate enough profits so that dealers could afford to build huge monuments to Toyota.
Well as we know in the current economy that has backed fired on Toyota and their sales are slumping along with the rest of the industry.
There are several Toyota projects on hold and many of the high overhead Toyota stores in California are in trouble.
