Chrysler to partner with Indian firm Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M)

From the article:” Troubled American car maker Chrysler may have initiated talks with Indian utility vehicle major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) for a partnership, which could involve an equity stake.

According to a top auto industry source, the talks are at an initial stage. Chrysler has had difficult days since former parent Daimler sold 80% stake in the company to private equity firm Cerberus. Sources say the US subprime crisis has dented Cerberus’ ability to pump more money into Chrysler.

The exact contours of the relationship is unclear but the intention will be to tap M&M’s engineering expertise to develop products for emerging markets, sources said.

Chrysler has just announced the appointment of Simon Boag as executive vice-president for global alliance operations. Mr Boag will report to Chrysler president and vice-chairman, Tom LaSorda directly. Detroit analysts are already reading signals into the creation of this new position. Mr Boag, they say, has been roped in to help Chrysler forge overseas alliances particularly in emerging markets. ”

Take a look at Mahindra & Mahindra’s history in Wikipedia. They have been building Jeeps in India since the 1940s.

Here’s a Detroit News article that may shed some light on the underlying cause. See especially the sentence beginning “Auto analyst John Casea…” which is located in the last paragraph under the subhead ‘How It Happened” , directly above the subhead “”Other Credit Sources.”

Ah my friend Mopar Man, I do speak the mystic language of the east.

I will give a generous offer of 20,000 Rupees for your burgundy 2008 Chrysler 300C, but you must give me free floor mats, a full tank of gas, 22inch custom chrome veheels, and a blond hair American college girl to close the deal, maybe.

I am looking forward to being the Quickie Mart of the American Car business.

    Thank you, come again.

No doubt M&M has money and that is what Chrysler needs a lot of, but will this partnership mean future Chrysler products will be made mostly in India? God lets hope not.

    You are the best Rich!

Now please give me a pack of Parliament Lights and I will be on my way!

If they do go with M&M just imagine the improved 800 customer phone center—complete with Indian outsourcing!

Lutz would have prevented a lot of this nonsense if King Lee had just annointed him instead of Ball-less Bob.

  10. WHO FAN Says:

Bob Lutz, Good for GM. Too bad for Chrysler. Lee Iacocca ruined his legacy when he treated Bob Lutz the same way Henry Ford II treated him.
