TheCarConnection likes the 2008 Jeep Patriot
From the review: “The seats, meanwhile, are some of the best we’ve experienced in an SUV. No, they don’t have the 27-way power settings of some luxury utes, but they have been carefully designed to comfortably, yet firmly hold you in place, even on the bumpiest off-road course. After spending the better part of the day driving, we felt like we could put in several more hours behind the wheel.”
“Our biggest complaint was with the continuously variable transmission under extreme acceleration. Heading up steep hills, the engine would race to redline and hold there as vehicle speed caught up. This “motor boating” is a phenomenon common to CVT design, but with the Patriot powertrain, the result was an unpleasantly brash and raucous roar from under the hood. Under less aggressive driving, both engines were acceptably smooth and reasonably quiet.”
Pretty positive review with few complains. Overall, thecarconnection.com seems to really like the value and performance of the 2008 Jeep Patriot. Let’s see if the Patriot can keep the momentum going…

This is so very encouraging and uplifting to the morale of the Mopar nation until we get to the heartbreaking part about the cheap interior. Enough said.

I know they like to keep the jeep heritage in these jeeps, but i think the headlights make the frontend look flatout hideous. The Compass is a flop, yet the frontend of the new Patriot resembles the Compass.Go figure…………..

The interior of the Compass does have a lot of cheap plastic, which is a major turnoff.Yesterday, I stopped by a local dealer and looked inside a new Dodge Avenger.Guess what i saw inside? The same cheap looking plactic interior.I guess thats why the starting price is under $18,000.When is this company going to learn?

I drive a Camry. Guess what, same cheap plastic. Same thing in the Accord, and just about every other model out there! By the way. I can’t stand the Camry in bad weather conditions! Worst tires out ther and the car can’t make right hand turns without slipping! When will the motor loving press write about that! But then again I guess that explains the number of Camrys with front end dammage I see on the back of tow trucks !
I’m trading in my 07 Camry on the avenger I drove yesterday! At least it sticks to the road, doesn’t feel like Im riding every pothole in Chicago and the dash doesn’t rattle when it’s cold! The radio sounds better too!!!

Amazing what different sheet metal does for a review. The same vehicle with the Compass exterior gets horrible reviews. Patriot looks like a hit, and it is priced to sell. Good review, hope this is a harbinger of things to come.
DaveS, with the same interior as the Compass and Caliber why are you shocked that the interior was described as plasticky? Didn’t we know this ahead of time? We need to move on.

Alex,
(1) Disappointed, not shocked. In fact, braced in advance with the knowledge that any review of a small Chrysler Group vehicle is going to tell the world that the interior is cheap. We shouldn’t have to suffer that feeling.
(2) It’s Auburn Hills that needs to move on, not the public. DCX needs to move on beyond the rut of cheap, plasticky interiors. It’s killing them. We should never resign ourselves to it. Why should any manufacturer get a free pass on its bad practices?

I realize the interiors in DCX vehicles pretty much could all use a lot of improvement, especially the Caliber line. The 08 LX platform cars are said to have much improved interiors, I guess we will see. Hopefully DCX got the message a year ago.
I guess my point is, we knew 6 months ago what the interior in the Patriot was going to look like, because it is the interior of the Compass. Why limit your comments to a known issue that has been commented on ad naseum? Everything else in the article was new stuff, and almost all positive, I guess I’d like to hear people’s takes on everything else.
